Institutional Assessment

Mission-Related Questions

The data that follows demonstrates that focused attention on a particular issue impacts the student experience. In all questions related to diversity, SF State’s results were impressive compared to all other groups. With social justice/equity as the first goal of the SF State strategic plan, much attention is placed on these issues, and it is clear from the data that this emphasis has an impact on students. In addition, a recent campaign encouraging students to vote also clearly had an impact on students.

Challenges

The data also show a number of areas requiring attention. We need to do a better job of career advising and we need to challenge students more. We need to understand why students don’t participate as much as students elsewhere in co-curricular activities, and we need to encourage departments to offer culminating experiences.

Surprises

A comparison of the NSSE/FSSE data indicate that students work less, commute less, and care for dependents less than faculty perceive them to do. This data calls for further study. It may be the case that the student population is evolved toward a more traditional student population or it may mean that we have two quite different populations of students, one more traditional population and another group who work and have family responsibilities.

NSSE

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is a survey instrument that measures students’ engagement in their university education through a series of approximately 100 questions that explore a student’s actual behaviors and experiences. The survey is administered at SF State every two years and the results are compared with the results at other CSU campuses and at other institutions in the Basic 2005 Carnegie Classification of 18.

FSSE

The Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) is a survey instrument that is parallel to the NSSE survey but is administered to faculty in order to give a comparison between student’s experiences and faculty perception of student experiences.

FSSE Response Rate
Overall: 39%
Number of Invited Faculty: 961
Number of Respondents: 375

CLA

The Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) measures critical thinking, analytic reasoning, problem solving, and written communication skills through tasks which require the student to develop a written response to open-ended questions.

In order to measure value-added to student learning, 100 SF State freshman students are tested in the fall term, and 100 senior level students are tested in the subsequent spring term. After scoring and analysis by the CLA team at the Council for Aid to Education, an institutional report is prepared for SF State with results for the term.
