X. Course Numbering System: SFSU Course Review & Approval Guidelines

The University implemented the current course numbering system in September 1971. This system established framework within which the academic curricular units could organize their offerings. Some effort was made in 1971 to establish specific numbers to be used by all academic areas offering a common type of course (e.g. 699- undergraduate special study, 899- graduate special study, etc.).

A summary of currently assigned numbers is as follows:

0-99 Remedial and other Non-Credit Courses
100-699 Undergraduate Level Courses
100-299 Lower Division Courses
300-699 Upper Division Courses
700-999 Graduate Level Courses
700-899 Graduate Courses (Master's) and Advanced Credential Courses
900-999 Joint Doctoral Courses

The following numbers are reserved from the special uses indicated:

CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION 650-659
(Where there is only one C&I course, it must be numbered 650.)
